How to Compare Steel Building Quotes: What to Check Beyond Price

Comparing steel building quotes? Check gauge, coating, engineered loads, end walls, shipping and engineering documents before you compare on price alone.

Put three steel building quotes side by side and the totals can be thousands of dollars apart. Sometimes that’s a real price difference. More often, the quotes describe three different buildings. Before you choose the lowest number, run each quote through this checklist.

1. Are the dimensions really the same?
Confirm width, length and height on every quote, and how each is measured. A “30x40” from one supplier and a “30x40” from another can differ in peak height or usable wall height — which matters for doors and equipment. See [common Quonset hut sizes] for how arch dimensions work.

2. What gauge is the steel?
Gauge is steel thickness — the lower the number, the thicker the steel. A quote that doesn’t state gauge isn’t comparable to one that does. Our [steel gauge guide] explains why it matters.

3. What’s the coating?
Galvalume and galvanized steel perform very differently over decades. Duro Span uses AZ180 Galvalume Plus for corrosion resistance. Read [Galvalume vs. Galvanized] before you treat two coatings as equal.

4. Is it engineered for your address?
This is the most important line on the quote. Wind, snow and seismic loads change dramatically from one region to the next:

• Snow loads drive the engineering in Michigan, Illinois, and northern parts of Kansas and Missouri.
• Wind loads and hurricane zones matter along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts — Florida, Texas, Georgia and the Carolinas.
• Seismic requirements come into play in California, Oregon, Utah and Nevada.
If a supplier quotes you without asking where the building is going, that price may not reflect a building that will pass inspection. Learn more in Understanding Wind and Snow Load Ratings.

5. What’s actually included?

End walls, framed openings, hardware, sealant, engineering drawings — one quote may include them and another may list them separately. Our breakdown of [what’s included in an arch steel building kit price] shows what to look for.

6. Is shipping included or separate?
Freight can be a significant line item. Make sure you’re comparing delivered prices to delivered prices.

7. Will you get engineering documents for your permit?

Most building departments require engineering documentation. Ask whether stamped drawings or an engineer’s certification letter are available and what they cost. See our permit guide for what typically drives permit requirements.

8. What does the warranty actually cover?
Read the terms, not just the number of years. Look at what’s covered (material, corrosion, workmanship), what isn’t (labor, consequential damage), and what you need to do to keep coverage.

9. Who are you buying from?

A manufacturer or distributor can answer engineering and configuration questions directly. A broker reselling another company’s buildings may not be able to. Ask who engineers and produces the building.

The bottom line

The right quote is the one that matches your site, your loads and your use — then has the best price. Getting those first eight points lined up turns three confusing quotes into one clear decision.
